I did download the software for Snow Leopard and the updated one for El Capitan. Hi, While the directions seem easy I have to admit I've never done CCC. You can use that in place of Time Machine (in the above instructions).

Connect second backup drive to the other Mac and use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone of the original drive to the second backup drive. If Time Machine is not current, you need to boot into Target mode (hold T down when starting), connect using Firewire or Thunderbolt to another Mac. That process will put a fresh system on and when it starts, you will be given choices - one of which is using Time Machine to restore from. If your Time Machine was current, you should start Recovery HD, use Disk Utility to erase the drive (test afterwards), and quit back to where you can re-install Mac OS X. It does look like your only method will be to reformat and restore. Holding the Power button down for 10+ seconds will shut your Mac off. I'll not try to restart until I hear from someone on what to do.
